Measuring your horse for a Horseware Rug
The fit of your rug is extremely important to ensure the comfort of your horse and to prevent rubbing and rug slippage. As horses of the same height at the wither come in a variety of shapes and sizes, it is useful to take certain measurements of your horse.
Using a soft measuring tape, measure from (A) at the centre point of the chest, across the point of the shoulder and to the point (B) at the centre of the tail. When you have the measurement, remove 10cm (4 inches) and choose your horse’s size from the table.
Please bear in mind that every horse is different and that these tables are guides only. There are many different styles of Horseware Rugs to suit all shapes and sizes.
Horseware Rug style suggestions based on your horse's build
For a deep-shouldered horse with a deep neck and wide build, you should look at the XL cut, which is 20% deeper in the neck and sides to give them room, or you could choose the Optimo style rugs which have the ultimate freedom of movement.
For a deep-shouldered, narrow horse you would be advised to have a Surefit design with V-Front closure.
For an average build of horse, go with a classic neck cut or if you prefer to give them more comfort again, a V-Front fit would suit.
For high-withered narrow horses a Wug® helps to reduce the wither pressure. For very narrow or young horses the Wug® or All-In-One design rugs are good choices to help fit their shape and prevent the rugs from slipping.
Petite Rug Size Chart
Specifically designed and cut to suit small ponies such as shetlands. Rather than take a horse rug and shrink it Horseware has looked at the way a small pony is put together and their body type and made them a special pattern to ensure a better fit.
Pony Rugs Size Chart
Specifically designed and cut to suit for ponies in a variety of styles. Horseware has developed a pony pattern to ensure that their Pony Range of rugs is suitable for the general body types of ponies. The Pony range crosses over with the Petite at the lower end of the range and into the horse range at the top to give more flexibility in fit. Some ponies are little horses and suit the cut of the smaller sizes of horse rug while others need the rug to be shorter in body and suit the pony cut better.
Horse Rugs Size Chart
Horseware offers a wide range of styles and designs to suitable different body types, shapes and needs of horses. The below chart is suitable for coolers, turnouts and stable rugs.
Not all styles of horse rugs are available in the 7'3" and 7'6" sizes.
Hood Size Guides
Horseware offers a range of hoods in both Turnout and Stable Rugs, useful if you need to add a hood to one of your rugs or change the weight of the neck and ideal for replacing damaged hoods without having to replace the full rug. It have be also useful if you have a horse or pony with a longer neck or shorter neck than the standard rug allowing you to customise a rug to suit by selecting a more appropriate length of hood.

Foal rugs are measured from A to B - Using a soft measuring tape, measure from (A) at the centre point of the chest, across the point of the shoulder and to the point (B) at the centre of the tail. When you have the measurement, remove 10cm (4 inches).

Detail of Horseware Rug Technologies and Features
Horseware uses various technologies in their turnout and stable rugs here is an overview of those technologies and features and how the rugs are constructed.
Waterproof Fabric
Horseware use and make a wide range of fabrics for their turnout and stable rugs for their Turnout Rugs they use various waterproof fabrics.
Lightweight rugs (0g) in low denier just like a lightweight waterproof jacket are less resistant to persistent heavy rain as the fabric isn't as tightly bound and they have no insulation layer which can cause the horse to sweat up if the interior of the rug has a high contrast to the outside temperature which is why it would always be recommended to use a 50g rug in chilly weather for horses that are clipped or have fine coats so the insulation can help prevent the breathability of the fabric being overwhelmed and becoming clammy.
Turnout Fabric Strength Chart
The strength of fabric you choose for your horse's turnout rug is very much dependent on your horse and how careful they and their friends in the field are with their rugs. The stronger the fabric generally the more expensive the rug is, unfortunately, that is just the way it goes in the rugging world.
Denier
Denier (D) is a unit measurement that is used to determine the thickness of individual yarns used in the weaving of fabric. The number indicates the amount of yarns within each threat e.g. 600 denier contains 600 yarns within each thread.
When comparing the denier of the same fabric, the higher the denier, the more yarns within the threads, and the thicker and therefore stronger the overall fabric will be. It's important to note that this does not translate directly across different fabrics. Each fabric is inherently different in strength.
This is why it is possible for a 1000D Ballistic Nylon to have a lighter denier than a 1200D polyester, but produces a stronger, lighter and more durable turnout.
HexStop Fabric - Rhino Turnout Rugs
The hexagonal Ripstop weave makes this fabric 30% stronger than standard polypropylene. The layered technology allows the rug to be warmer whilst reducing the weight of the rug by 20%.
Duo Force Fabric - Rambo® Duo Force Turnout Rug
Made from unique 1000D Ripstop Ballistic Nylon and including a reinforcing weave the Rambo Duo Force fabric is 60% stronger than the 1000 denier Ballistic Nylon fabric.
Barrier Technology - Rhino Turnout Rugs
Found in the Rhino Turnout range Barrier Technology uses an AquaTrans fabric to act as a waterproof yet breathable membrane under the outer fabric. This means that if the outer is damaged yet the membrane remains intact that the rug remains waterproof.
Aquatrans Technology
1. The outer Hydrophobic layer is water hating and drives this water vapor through the fabric and away from the outer of the turnout. Therefore it repels the entry of any water through it coming from the outer.
2. The inner Hydrophillic layer is water loving and draws sweat away from the body.
Aquatrans Technology is used in some of the Rambo range.
- Tough 1000 denier Polypropylene Outer
- Waterproof barrier
- Thermobonded Fibrefill of whatever weight your rug is
- Polyester lining
Turnout Rug & Stable Rug Weights
Horseware makes rugs in a wide variety of weights from lightweight 0g to heavyweight 450g to suit all types of weather and horses.
Lightweight Rugs
0g is usually only used in summer and mild wet weather.
50g to 100g is usually used in spring and autumn as protection from chilly weather, although for hardier types 100g can see them through mild winters.
Medium Weight Rugs
200g to 350g are used in cold weather for horses that feel the cold, lack shelter in their field, have a drafty stable or are partially clipped.
Heavy Weight Rugs
350 to 450g are used in cold weather for horses that are particularly vulnerable to cold or are fully clipped.
Horseware also has liners available in 100g, 200g, 300g and 400g weights to increase the warmth rating of your rugs, allowing you more versatility with your horse's wardrobe.
Thermobonded Fibrefil
Horseware uses Thermobonded fibrefill for insulation in their Turnout and Stable Rugs. Thermobonded Fibrefill retains the original structure and loft over time even through washing which in turn helps your rug maintain optimal heat retention.
Vari-Layer Technology
Horseware Vari-Layer Technology is the layering of thermobonded fibrefill to gain maximum heat retention without the heaviness of a standard fill for more warmth with less weight. The weight reduction makes the rugs easy to manage as an owner and also means that your horse is carrying less weight.
Vari-Layer is particularly useful for horses that struggle with holding conditions or older horses. The thickest fill over the parts of the body such as the rump and back which lose heat and layering the fibre on the sides allows the rug to sit closer to the horse's body, trapping the warm air and allowing greater belly coverage underneath. Vari-Layer can be an invaluable tool to aid in keeping them warm and cosy even on the coldest of nights.
Vari-Layer Technology is available in a limited number of styles in the Rhino and Rambo ranges.
Horseware Liner System
The Horseware Liner System is a simple and flexible rugging system that allows owners to change the weight (warmth rating) of their turnouts and stable rugs without the need to buy another outer rug and reducing bulk and the risks associated with using two rugs.
The liner system involves using a special rug, a liner which has a simple chest fastening, velcro attachments on either side of the neck and clips at the back, with no surcingles instead the liner is fastened to the turnout or stable rug to stay secure.
The liner system is a space-saving and economical option for owners allowing you to change the weight of a turnout or stable rug quickly and effectively by buying liners instead of a more expensive full rug.
Liner Rug can also be washed in domestic washing machines for easy quick washing which can be especially useful for clipping horses.
This system allows you to create a rug that meets your horse's individual needs whilst offering maximum versatility depending on weather conditions.
There are a variety of liners available 100g, 200g, 300g and 400g weights as well as a fleece liner, Air Max liner and Quick Dry liner to add warmth to a rug.
There is also a Fly Liner a showerproof liner that can be used on compatiable Fly Rugs.
Liner Compatible
The liner system is available in Bravo, Rhino and Rambo ranges. These rugs have detachable hoods and have three loops on either side of the neck, two for the hood and one for the liner.
It is not recommended that liners be used on all-in-one rugs as the neck cannot be secured so may slip.
The Optimo Rug's have their own Optimo Liners that use split technology to mirror the outer.
Liner Included
In the Rambo Range, there are a number of styles which include a liner rug. The Rambo Duo for example is a style which offers two warmth ratings, the turnout by itself and the turnout plus the liner. The outer and the liner are sold together as a set.
There are a couple of styles which Horseware are offering as a bundle. The bundle includes an outer turnout and two liners to allow the rug to be useful in varioustimes of years.
The Tech Bundles are generally weighted to be suitable for warmer weather and include a Air Max Liner which is designed to help dry a damp horse dry under their turnout - ideal for owners who are limited on time.
Classic Cut Neck With Straight Front Closure
The double straight front fasting offers a secure closure that sits aligned with the point of the shoulder. There is a velcro fastening to hold the rug secure while being fastened and to reduce the pressure on the buckles. Male and female blanket buckle fastenings that clip together. Double fastened for added security.
Advantage: Quick and simple to use, lightweight
Disadvantage: The buckles are fixed so they offer no adjustment so it can be difficult to fit horses that sit between sizes.
Available on the Mio range, Hero, Hero Ripstop, Bravo 12 and Bravo 12 Pony ranges.
V-Front Closure with Surefit neck design
The V- front fastening is two trigger clips one coming from the shoulder at an angle in line with the neck and the other straight that clip into a single moveable ring with connectors in symmetrical points. The design helps to eliminate pressure on the shoulder allowing for more comfort while grazing.
The Surefit neck design allows the rug to sit further in front of the wither with a smoother slope to cup the front line of the shoulder and finish deeper in the front of the neck. The Sure-fit design gives a snugger fit yet the deeper neck allows more freedom to graze.
Under the V-Front is a double lock set of touch-close fastenings to secure the rug and offer a small adjustment.
Advantages - The ring part of the fastening being free to move offers more comfort than a fixed buckle, the V shape offers more room at the front for the horse's neck, straight forward to use
Disadvantages: It's a lot of metal at the front which can mean that it weighs down lighter-weight rugs.
Available on the Bravo 12 range, Rhino range, Rambo range
Disc Front Closure
The Disc Front Closure incorporates our four V-Front closure points and uses a plastic disc instead of a ring to attach four touch-close straps. Under the disc is a touch-close fastening for a secure fit and to hold the rug in place while you fasten the touch-close outer straps. The disc offers a flat finish to the front of the rug.
Advantages - Lighter weight than metal fastenings, a small amount of adjustment available in four straps, flat finish at the chest
Disadvantages: while only two straps need to be undone or done in fastening is can be a faff, especially with muddy rugs, customers have said that the fit of the rug at the neck is different to the V-front
Available on the Bravo 12 range, Rhino range, Rambo range
The Plus Option (Neck Included)
Many Horseware rugs have a neck included with them these are known as Plus. Wherever you see Plus in the title of a Horseware Rug it means that there is a detachable neck included, that is attached with touch close fastenings.
A hood or neck is a useful way to increase the protection your horse gets from the weather. A detachable hood means that your rug is more flexible, if the weather is fine then you can remove the hood, when the weather is blustery then the neck can be added.
The Plus option is extremely popular however it is not for every horse, horses with a high wither, horses with a dipped back who struggle with no neck rugs that slip back may continue to have that problem with a detachable neck. The point where the hood and rug meet can cause an active horse to rub out their mane.
The weight of the neck/hood will be equal to the weight of the rug, for example, if you select a Rhino 100g Plus, the neck/hood will be 100g also.
Styles that have Plus options within their range as Hero, Hero Plus, Bravo, Rhino, Rambo
Hood Loops
Horseware sells a number of rugs without a hood included, however many of these designs have hood loops to allow you to add a hood at a later point if required. Not all Horseware no neck rugs have hood loops so it is important to check.
Not all colourways are sold as separate hoods, so if you do choose to add a hood at a later date then you may not be able to get an exact match.
Hood Closure Types
Horseware use two types of hood closure on their detachable hoods. The most common is the velcro loop hood closure as seen on the Bravo 12 and Hero Rugs, there are some older styles that use the Velcro Sandwich closure.
The Velcro Loop Hood Closure is flexible and allows the hood to move more freely with the rug while still being secure and offering coverage over the area where rug and hood overlap.
The Velcro Sandwich Closure offers a very secure fastening over a larger area where the hood and rug meet, this fastening is less flexible.
Integrated Hood (All in One)
Horseware has a number of rugs with integrated hoods known as all-in-one designs. The all-in-one is especially useful for narrow built horses.
The all-in-one design is popular for winter especially as it offers even warmth from ears to tail. Useful for horses that feel the cold, veterans, fully clipped horses and those that have little to no shelter in exposed fields.
Available in a limited number of styles including Mio, Hero, Bravo and Rhino.
Wug Neck Wug Cut
The Wug is a rug design that offers a high-cut neck design to give a snug fit and eliminate wither pressure with V-front closure to give freedom of movement to graze. It is essentially a half neck.
The Wug design is useful for horses that have a high wither which can cause the rug to slip back, horses that rub at the chest.
XL Sizing
Available in a limited number of styles the XL fit is designed for larger, wider horses with a 20% deeper neck fit and sides to help give a comfortable fit and excellent coverage.
Especially handy for wide horses that struggle to fit into standard rugs, or may usually be sized up to achieve the fit at the neck/chest but end up with excess fabric as the rug size is too big everywhere else.
Single Leg Arches
Leg arches are a unique design seen at the front shoulder that helps to maintain freedom of movement while allowing the rug to stay secure under the belly and offer additional belly coverage.
Leg arches are originally a unique Horseware Ireland design that allows for freedom of movement without the addition of extra fabric or a concentrated pressure point that are common to gussets.
Split Technology - The Rambo Optimo Range
Split technology takes the shoulder pleat that is seen in many rugs and takes it to the next level by extending up further to end close to the wither. The Split allows more freedom of movement through the shoulder and creates more room, this technology is very useful for wider horses as well as big moving horses.
Two-Crossed Surcingles
To keep the rug secure two adjustable crossed surcingle's under the belly to offer a custom fit.
Mainly used on rugs with front leg arches such as Mio, Hero, Hero Ripstop, Bravo 12 Pony, Fly Rugs.
Three Cross Surcingles
To keep the rug secure three adjustable crossed surcingle's under the belly to offer a custom fit.
Mainly used on Rugs with two leg arches such as Ameco Turnout, Rhino and some Rambo rugs
Three Straight Surcingles
To keep the rug secure three adjustable crossed surcingle's under the belly to offer a custom fit.
Used on some Rambo Rugs and some fly rug styles.
Belly Flap
Used on a number of styles of fly rugs especially those that are for sensitive horses the Extended Belly Flap found on some styles helps to increase coverage under the belly to protect vulnerable areas. The Belly Flap is usually teamed with three adjustable straight surcingles for a secure fit.
Rambo Safety Surcingles
The Rambo Safety Surcingle System is a safety measure added to Rambo turnouts with three surcingle's. This system is created using a unique combination of Velcro and a plastic loop. The system can withstand 100kg of pressure and the plastic clip will break in the event of an emergency, giving extra protection for your horse.
The surcingle strap connects to the blanket with a plastic loop. This loop will release should the horse become dangerously caught in its surcingle straps.
The Velcro system allows for the removal of the surcingle strap for wash or repair.
In the event of the plastic loop breaking under pressure, the surcingle strap should hang on the opposite side of the rug still connected. The surcingle strap can be re-attached using the rectangular clip until a replacement plastic loop can be attached.
Reflectech
Consisting of reflective yarn woven into the turnout's outer to help increase your horse's visibility in dark or low-light conditions. Particularly useful if your horse is out in a big field with other horses or if they like to hide. Also helpful if you walk your horse on the road to get to and from your yard.
Reflective Safety Strips
Horseware uses reflective strips at the front and back of their turnouts to help improve visibility in dark evenings and nights with superior reflective properties in this fabric due to the glass bead technology inside.
Tail Fastenings
Horseware use Tail fastenings on their rugs instead of leg straps.
Horseware Rugs features a dart the back of their rugs to help the rug follow the shape of the horse allow for a secure fit without the use of leg straps to make these rugs suitable and safer for owners of young, sensitive horses and those that may kick out if leg straps needed to be fastened.
Tail String or Fillet String - used on coolers and stable sheets and lightweight rugs, highly adjustable, slides through loops on either side of the back or the rug. The Fillet Strings are removable.
Tail Cord or Fillet Cord - Adjustable however it is sewn into the rug at the D-rings at the back of the rug so unless you are swapping or replacing the cord it cannot be removed. The Tail Cord is a nylon strap with a sliding strap buckle that allows the rug to be let out and pulled on, communally seen on on turnouts Hero 900, Hero Ripstop, Fly Rugs.
Wipe Clean Tail Cord - Fixed length with elastic rope inside of a PVC tube with clips at either side for ease of use. The wipe clean design helps you to keep the rug cleaner. The wipe clean design is available to buy separately and can be a quick and easy upgrade for any turnout or stable rug.
UV Protection
Horse offers a variety of different fly and summer sheets to protect your horse from harmful UV rays and to avoid coat bleaching during the summer months.
UV Protection rates vary depending on the outer fabric the rug is made from. The closer the weave of the outer fabric, the higher UV protection that can be offered. Light and bright-coloured fabrics such as white or silver might seem impractical for use on horses however these light colours are best for reflecting sunlight and helping to prevent overheating.
Camo Technology - Used in the Camo Fly Series Rugs
Horseware are always striving to offer the best solution for common problems.
The Camo Fly Collection of Horse Rugs is based on research into how flies react to zebras and their stripes to find a pattern which deters flies from landing on your horse.
How does it work?
Research surrounding how flies react to the stripes on zebras suggests that the monochrome stripes confuse flies acting as a natural deterrent to the insect. Horseware has developed a pattern to help confuse the flies by layering black lines on a grey background to create an optical illusion in the eye of a fly. It breaks up the shape of the horse, so insects struggle to identify the horse as a target. The pattern breaks up the shape of the horse and the insect struggle to work out where they need to land.
Moisture Wicking
Moisture Wicking Technology sees the fabric treated to have superior wicking functions, this takes moisture away from the body keeping your horse comfortable after washing or exercise. Moisture wicking is also a natural property of some fabrics, such as fleece.
Breathable
Horseware uses Breathable fabrics as much as possible especially on their turnouts as this moisture escapes from inside the rug helping to keep your horse dry and comfortable.
Breathable to 3000mm for all turnouts.
Antibacterial
To keep your horse's coat healthy some Horseware rugs have an antibacterial lining. The lining fabric has been treated to offer protection against bacteria, mould and mildew.
Usually found on Rambo and Rhino rugs.
Anti-static
The lining on Rhino and Rambo series turnout rugs has anti-static properties that can cope with most charged conditions and with a charge that may be generated by the lining and your horse's coat for the comfort of your horse.
Shine Enhancing Lining
The most common lining on Horseware rugs is polyester. The Shine Enhancing Lining is used on the Bravo 12, Hero and some fly rugs to help reduce rubbing and keep your horse comfortable and their coat in great condition while rugged.
The shine-enhancing lining can help reduce rubbing however is your horse is susceptible to rubbing it will not be able to prevent it altogether.
Fly Masks
Protecting your horse from flies can be a challenge especially if they are sensitive. Horseware makes a number of fly masks in different styles. Not all fly masks are suitable for all horses in terms of size or the area they cover.
Rambo Fly Mask
Rambo Fly masks are designed to offer more space over the eyes and good general coverage over the face.

Ice Vibe
Ice-Vibe® therapeutic horse boots combine cooling and massage therapy to reduce soreness and swelling while helping to boost circulation and stimulate healing.
Traditionally cooling a horse's leg to take 'heat' out of it to reduce pain and swelling was done with a hose pipe or buckets of cold water. Over the years a number of other products have come around to try and replicate and indeed exceed the cooling effect of hosing and of course not get your horse (or you) wet in the process. Ice-Vibe may use cold packs that are fozen in the freezer or cooled in cold water but they not designed to freeze the leg, they are designed to cool so your horse's legs should be cool to the touch after treatment on setting 2 with cold packs. Using setting 3 with cold packs will leave the legs warm to the touch. The results of Ice-Vibe are not achieved by the coolness of the leg but how the horse feels and goes the next days.
Ice alone relieves pain but doesn't promote healing so Horseware looked at how to improve healing by increasing circulation. Horseware Ice-Vibe® Boots can be used to prevent, reduce and repair injury.
Cold aids in slowing down inflammation whilst massage panels improve circulation allowing oxygen to reach the tired and damaged tissue. This combination stimulates the repair of tendons and ligaments in your horses' legs, hocks and knees. Used before or after exercise on a regular basis, Ice-Vibe® boots can help keep your horse healthy and sound all year round.
ICE-VIBE® boots are rechargeable. There are two main versions the older version uses beads inside the cool packs and no display on the panel. The newer versions use gel in the cold packs and a LED display in the vibration panel.
There are three settings on the vibration panels.
Setting 1 is a 10-minute cycle that’s designed to introduce your horse to the vibrating of the boots. The Ice-Vibe user guide recommends using only Setting 1 for three days until your horse is fully accustomed.
Setting 2 is a 20-minute cycle that can be used without the cold packs before rides, with the cold packs after rides and when rehabbing from an injury.
Setting 3 is the strongest vibration setting. Lasting 20 minutes, Setting 3 should only be used with the cold packs and on bigger-boned horses or horses with old injuries and excessive scar tissue.
Please be aware that not all horses can tolerate the vibration panels and even with a gentle introduction on the lowest setting. Ice-Vibe boots can be used as cooling boots only without the vibration panels.
Ice Vibe Boots
The Ice Vibe Boots come in two sizes Full and X/Full.
Full size will fit most small (14.2HH and upwards) to medium horses (15.2HH) legs that are not heavy boned.
X/Full are usually used for hind legs or for heavy boned warmblood types or for those with long cannon bones.
Generally speaking if your horse takes Cob or Full size brushing boots they will be fine with Full Boots. If your horse takes X/Full or takes Full but could do with a bit more height they will be fine with the X/Full boots.
As Ice Vibe boots are used for therapy and are intended to be used while the horse is standing it is as much of a concern for the boots to be long.
- Full size will fit medium to large ponies, small horses and thoroughbreds
- X/Full are usually used for hind legs or for heavy-boned warmblood types or for those with long cannon bones.

Massage therapy is one of the oldest known methods of therapy and is renowned for its ability to promote healing. Massage can help to reduce stiffness and soreness and support blood supply to muscles.
Sportz-Vibe’s massage action is gentle enough that it won’t overwork your horse’s muscles but will help to reduce muscle tension. The massage panels are removable which allows you to target specific areas.
Benefits
- Improves blood supply to muscles
- Reduces stiffness and soreness
- Supports healing
Using Sportz-Vibe ZX before exercise can help reduce the risk of injury as increasing blood flow to muscles, tendons and ligaments help to make them more elastic.
Sportz-Vibe ZX can help manage everyday wear and tear, and help your horse to recover more quickly after hard work.
Sportz-Vibe ZX Wireless Message Rug
The Sportz-Vibe ZX Rug is designed with a highly adjustable chest fastening that allows the rug to fit multiple horses and ponies between a range of rug sizes. If your horse is wide and between rugs it is suggested you size up.

Rambo Ionic - Negative Ion Therapy
Rambo® Ionic Negative Ion Therapy is a non-invasive, measurable way to support health.* Negative ions are absorbed into the bloodstream supporting blood flow to muscles.
*Calculated by a measure of over 1000 negative ions released per cubic cm.
Rambo Ionic products should be introduced gradually and built up over time to extended periods of up to 8 hours.
It is not recommended for use on pregnant mares or horses with underlying heart conditions.
Rambo Ionic Stable Boots
Available in Full or X/Full.
If your horse takes Cob or Full size brushing boots then Full size is suggested.
If your horse takes X/Full brushing boots then X/Full boots are suggested.
These boots should only be used for travel if your horse is quiet in the box or trailer as they do not offer the same coverage of travel boots. It would also be recommended to use over reach boots to give coverage to the bulb of the heel.
Rambo Ionic Horse Rugs
Measured the same way as Turnouts, Stables and Cooler Horse Rugs.
Using a soft measuring tape, measure from (A) at the centre point of the chest, across the point of the shoulder and to the point (B) at the centre of the tail. When you have the measurement, remove 10cm (4inches) and choose your horse’s size from the table. The EU measurement (C to D) is along the back from wither to the top of the tail.

Using Ionic Therapy in warm weather
Keep in mind that Rambo Ionic aids and promotes circulation within the equine user. While the surface temperature of your animal may increase with wear, testing of this product has not resulted in an increase or excess sweating during use or when worn in hot climates or warm weather. However, if you do find your horse is too hot and uncomfortable, Horseware suggests changing the use of the Ionic rug to cooler time periods such as overnight.
Using Ionic Therapy while travelling
Ionic products are safe to use while travelling however please check weather conditions before travelling to ensure the horse will not overheat during the journey if wearing a rug. It would not be recommended for horses that sweat up during travelling.
If your horse is happy with the Ionic boots in a stable environment then they should be fine travelling in them however please keep in mind that the boots do not cover the same areas as travel boots and overreach boots would be suggested for added coverage. If your horse is not a still passenger then the Ionic boots would not be recommended as they do not cover enough area to guard against knocks.
It is recommended to use these boots before travelling to understand how your horse reacts to them.
Relieves pressure and discomfort on the sensitive parts of the head, reducing pain and numbness and giving all riders a kinder option.
The Micklem is available in three main styles the Competition and the Multi bridle.
The Micklem Competition Bridle is the FEI and Competition legal version of the bridle. Cannot be used as a bitless bridle or lunge Cavesson.
The Micklem Deluxe Competition Bridle is the FEI and Competition legal version of the bridle with raised padded browband and noseband. Cannot be used as a bitless bridle or lunge Cavesson.
The Mickle Multibridle is able to be used as a bridle, lunge cavesson or as a three strength options of bitless bridle. Not competition legal.
Design Features of the Micklem Bridle
1. The noseband sits higher avoiding pressure on the fragile nose bones. The bottom back strap gives similar functionality to a flash noseband.
2. Noseband avoids pressure on the motor and sensory nerves exiting at this point, reducing discomfort and numbness on the lower areas of the head.
3. A shaped, widened and padded headpiece with no separate uncomfortable narrow noseband, spreads the pressure evenly over a wide area of the poll.
4. The shaped cheekpiece fits comfortably around the protruding cheekbones, avoiding unnecessary pressure.
5. The noseband and back straps avoid the protruding molar teeth, so sensitive tissue inside the mouth is not damaged.
Fitting the Micklem Bridle
Fitting the bit straps
Attach the bit straps to your bit first, with the buckle on the outside and the end of the strap facing upwards, then attach to the bridle using the bit rings at the bottom of the cheek pieces.
Positioning the Front Nose Piece
The key to fitting your Rambo® Micklem Bridle is to ensure that the front nosepiece is approx 2 to 3 inches higher than the corners of the mouth and at least six fingers above the nostrils.
Doing the Top Back Straps
This should be fastened flush with the skin, not loose like a throat lash.
Doing the Bottom Back Straps
This fits like a standard dropped noseband, underneath the bit and is flush with the skin.
Fitting the Tongue and Bar Protector
Use the appropriate length clips to join the bit to the side rings and you have a unique tongue and bar protection system.
Micklem Original Size Guide
Micklem Bridles tend to fit smaller than a traditional bridle, so you may find that if your horse is between sizes they may need to go up in size.

Micklem 2 Multibridle
Bitless option 1 - The most common way of setting up your Multibridle as a bitless bridle is with the straps running under the chin. As the reins are pulled pressure is exerted on the nose and jaw.
Bitless option 2 - The most severe way to set up your Micklem Bridle as a bitless bridle is with a strap over the poll that crosses under the jaw, through the nose bit rings, and to the reins. As the reins are pulled pressure is exerted on the nose, jaw, and poll.
Bitless option 3 - The mildest way of setting up your Multibridle as a bitless bridle with the noseband closed and the reins attached to the bit rings. When the reins are pulled pressure is exerted on the front of the nose.
