Since the conception of the brand in 2005, Samshield has established its place as a proposer of premium equestrian products, including their distinctive riding hats, and more recently rider accessories and clothing, too.

Samshield originated from founder Sam Maloigne's observation that there was a lack of customisation in the riding hats on the market at the time. Coming from a motocross background, where customised helmets are the riders' pride and joy, Maloigne sought to introduce this same customisation to the riding helmet industry, with safety as a priority.

Working together with his former employer Jim Jannard, who created Oakley eyewear, alongside a team of designers and riders, Maloigne set about to "launch a product only when you are sure that it will be the best of the market." The team believed in their products and created a brand that would offer a unique combination of protective technology, elegance and distinctiveness that quickly found its place in the equestrian safety market.

Samshield 2.0 vs the original Samshield riding hat

The Samshield 2.0 is the result of four years of research, offering improved fit, unprecedented comfort and optimised airflow in comparison with older Samshield hats. The 2.0 hats maintain current safety standards. The shape of the Samshield 2.0 shell is slightly rounder and deeper than the original Shadowmatt and Miss Shield, improving the positioning of the harness for a closer feel. New ventilation points maximise airflow and new edging gives the opportunity for more crystals to be added.

Samshield safety standards

Samshield helmets undergo impact tests, lateral deformation tests, and penetration tests. Samshield helmets meet CE EN1384:2017 and ASTM F1163-15 SEI safety standards, so meet the current regulations on safety standards in riding hats.

Caring for a Samshield helmet

Samshield helmets should be stored away from sources of heat and out of direct sunlight. If your Samshield riding hat gets wet, for example in the rain, leave it to dry naturally. A micro fibre cloth can then be used once the hat has dried to polish any watermarks out of the shell. The liners of Samshield hats are machine washable at 30°. It is recommended you replace your riding hat after 5 years or after a fall, whichever comes first, as one impact will significantly compromise the hat's ability to absorb impact from a fall.

The Samshield manufacturing process

Samshield are a French company and their riding hats are made in a workshop in France, where members of the team work to assemble each part of the helmet individually. The polycarbonate inner shell is covered by hand with premium materials including premium leathers, Alcantara® or Crystal Fabric Swarovski®, for example. If you choose for your hat to be customised with Swarovski® crystals, the crystals are individually clinched on by hand by a goldsmith. Samshield helmets are made with great diligence, and this is why bespoke orders can take a while to manufacture.

Samshield custom orders waiting times

A Samshield custom-made riding hat usually takes up to 8 weeks to arrive, from you designing your new hat to it arriving into stock with us. In busy periods, such as in the run-up to Christmas, it can take a little longer.

Samshield aftercare?

In the event of a fall, Samshield will examine your Samshield riding hat to assess damage. They are then happy to replace damaged parts at a cost of €50, or replace the helmet if it is less than 2 years old if required. This service is available until the hat is 5 years old. The warranty on Samshield riding hats in case of a defect is one year. For more information on how to send your riding hat back to Samshield after a fall, consult their website. Samshield's R&D team continue to improve existing designs and generate new ones. In recent years, they have expanded their collection to include accessories and clothing, using engineers' technical vision combined with the innovative approach of young designers. The brand is a pioneer of innovation and continues to listen to young professional riders' needs in order to continue developing and meeting the demands of an evolving sport and increasing science.
