Charles Owen is a leading British manufacturer of horse riding safety wear including fixed peak riding helmets, commonly chosen for dressage and showjumping as well as leisure riding, and skull cap riding hats, chosen for all activities including cross-country.

Charles Owen began as a manufacturer of military helmets during the First World War, before branching out to manufacturing equestrian helmets some years later, inspired by a family interest in horse riding. The brand prioritised comfortable and correct fit, as well as ventilation through their Microfit system. In 1983, Charles Owen were awarded the Royal Warrant as the supplier of protective helmets to the Royal Mews at Buckingham Palace, and today remain a trusted British brand for equestrian safety wear.

Recently, the brand has grown to include a range of body protectors for horse riding, incorporating technology that meets the latest safety standards whilst offering comfort while in the saddle.

Are Charles Owen riding hats up to standard?

Yes, all of the Charles Owen riding helmets that we stock meet the current safety standards. Almost all of Charles Owen helmets meet triple standard: PAS015, VG1 and ASTM. The 4Star additionally meets SNELL E2016.

How long should you keep a riding hat?

It is advised to replace your riding hat after it takes a knock, whether that be from a fall from a horse or dropping it. The technology inside the hat works to protect your head if it takes a knock, and so is then compromised, unable to offer the same protection again. If you do not fall off or drop your hat, it is advised to replace your riding helmet after 5 years due to natural wear and tear of the materials.

Are Charles Owen riding hats a round or oval fit?

The good news is that Charles Owen riding hats are available in either a round or a more oval fit, to suit different shapes of head. Many riders find that many brands of riding hat create pressure on the sides of their head, and this may be because their riding hat is an oval shape and their head is relatively round. The round shaped riding hats by Charles Owen have an ‘R’ inside the sizing label.

What is MIPS technology in riding hats?

Charles Owen was one of the first to adopt MIPS technology in its riding hats. MIPS is an additional brain protection system designed to protect against rotational motion of the brain and subsequent brain injuries. It takes form as an additional liner inside the riding helmet which allows the head to move 10-15mm in all directions, which has been proven to reduce the rotational movement to the brain and therefore reduce the risk of injury – particularly concussion and traumatic brain injury. Do Charles Owen hats have interchangeable liners?

Some Charles Owen hats have liners that can be easily removed. These hats have a different sizing system – you purchase the size shell that you need, for example Small, Medium or Large, and then the liner, which will be sized in cm, separately. This relatively new liner system means that you can easily remove the liner to wash it.

It is very important to always wear a riding hat while mounted on a horse, and it is advised to wear a riding hat when handling horses, for example while grooming, leading to and from the field, or lunging. A riding hat will therefore become a piece of kit a horse owner uses on most days, and so having one that fits accurately and comfortably is very important.

If you have a skull cap, you can add a riding hat silk over the top, and these come in a huge range of fun as well as more traditional colours and style.
