Although horses lose relatively little heat through their necks in comparison with their bodies and quarters, a neck for a turnout rug or a lycra hood has many benefits. A hood or neck can keep the mane lying flat and knot free, keep the horse's neck clean, and adds more protection from the wind and cold. Turnout rugs with attachments for a neck easily give you the option of adding or removing a neck to your rug.

Do horses need neck covers?

The benefits of using a neck cover with your rug is that you add warmth and, if you are using a turnout neck cover with a turnout rug, protect the horse's neck from getting wet. They also encourage the mane to lie flat and can help to keep your horse clean. A horse only loses a small proportion of its heat through its neck, however, so your horse may not need a neck cover.

My horse's rug is rubbing - how can I stop rubs from horse rugs?

When the horse's coat changes in the spring, you may find your horse gets patches on their skin where the hair is very short and they are almost bald. A bib or shoulder guard made of lycra worn underneath your horse's rug is designed to help prevent these rug rubs. It is likely your horse will not need to wear this all year-round, but only when their coat is changing.

Can I use different brands of rug and neck cover?

We find that manufacturers make their neck covers to fit with the attachments on their turnout rugs, so generally, neck covers are not interchangeable with different brands of rug.
