French brand Flex-On were one of the first to develop their take on what we now term the modern technical horse riding stirrup, making use of technologies that help with rider comfort, position and security. This technology takes form in three specifications of the stirrups: shock absorption, stirrup placement and stirrup ergonomics.

The wide footbed of Flex-On stirrups distributes the rider's weight across a broader surface area and so reduces the strain on the rider's joints, enhanced by the elastomer shock absorbers within the footbed. These elastomers absorb much of the shock generated by the horse's movement, further protecting the rider's joints. All Flex-On stirrups have wide footbed and shock-absorbing elastomers. These stirrups may therefore be chosen by those with known joint problems or those simply looking to maximise their comfort in the saddle, helping them to develop and maintain correct rider position without discomfort.

In terms of ergonomics, the skewed slot for the stirrup leathers means that the stirrups sit more harmoniously with the rider's leg than traditional stirrup irons, helping the rider to find optimum connection with the horse. The angle of the slot also means that the foot should be able to find a lost stirrup more easily. The angled treads additionally help the rider to keep their heels down, again alleviating the joints, reducing fatigue and encouraging correct lower leg position. Flat, non-angled tread stirrups are often preferred by dressage riders, and are recommended by Flex-On for riders with hypermobile ankles.

Safe-On stirrups feature a safety arm that opens and so releases the foot in the event of a fall. Safety stirrups significantly reduce the risk of the foot becoming stuck if the rider was to become unseated.

Are Flex-On stirrups worth the money?

Many of our team have tried and tested Flex-On stirrups and our favourite features are the grippy tread that saves you from losing a stirrup when your horse is a little sharp or over-jumps; the inclined tread keeping you comfortable during long hacks or intense schooling sessions, and of course the safety arm on the Safe-On stirrups. We think it would be great to make the most of the customisability, especially if you have a colour scheme for competing or one you feel especially suits your horse.

Are Flex-On stirrups dressage legal?

Yes, Flex-On stirrups adhere to the current rules from the FEI and British Dressage. Their rulebooks are easily accessible if you require any more information.

Are Flex-On stirrups inclined or flat?

Some of Flex-On's designs feature a flat footbed while others are inclined. Inclined stirrups help the rider to keep their heels down and therefore alleviate stress on the rider's joints, as well as helping to improve rider position.
