The combination of mouthpiece and cheek type you choose depends on what you are looking to gain from your bit – whether you are looking for better acceptance, extra control or to change your horse’s way of going. A snaffle bit is a mouthpiece attached to two rings, which describes a broad range of bits. These bits do not exert poll pressure and act on the mouth only, and can come with a variety of mouthpieces. Fixed cheeks like eggbutts, hanging cheeks, D rings or full cheeks keep the bit stable in the mouth and help with steering, whereas the loose rings give the rider more play between the bit and their hands.

Bits with more than one ring on the cheek exert some poll pressure, which can have the effect of lifting or lowering the head, and can provide extra control of a stronger horse. Gag bits and Pelhams & Kimblewicks fall into this category.

The mouthpiece of the bit can dictate whether the horse accepts the bit or not, with some horses working nicely with the effect of a straight bar, mullen mouth or lozenged design, and others responding better to more undulating pressure designed to help with control.

With developments in research, there are now many different materials available in horse bits, designed for example to warm up in the mouth more quickly, promote lubrication and chewing with a sweet taste, and absorb impact from tooth enamel.

How do you measure a horse bit?

Bits should be measured from the inside of one ring to the inside of the other, so you are only measuring the mouthpiece; this can be achieved by laying the bit flat with a tape measure against it. Some brands manufacture their bits in 1/4 inch sizing, while others use increments of 1/2 inch. European brands often use cms.

Can a horse eat with a bit in?

A horse will be able to eat hay or grass with the bit in, but this is not to be encouraged as the hay or grass can become wrapped around the bit, and there is an increased risk of choke.

What is the nicest bit for a horse?

Snaffle bits are generally viewed as the mildest bits for horses as they exert no poll pressure. However, a bit is only as strong as the rider's hands, and if a rider is having to pull very hard on a snaffle bit to control the horse, then a snaffle stops being a mild bit. In this case, a stronger bit would be kinder, so the rider gets a reaction from the horse with a less strong aid. A mouthpiece with a thicker diameter used to be viewed as kinder, and it is true that the broader surface area these mouthpieces cover mean they exert force in a less concentrated way, but it is important that the bit is not too thick for the horse's mouth conformation. A thicker bit is therefore not always kinder. It is also important to consider the material of the bit; some metals and plastic are warmer and softer than traditional bitting materials such as stainless steel.
