Barbour have their roots in oil cloth production and motorcycling. This means that they know a thing or two about making robust clothing, but it is their approach to design and impeccable style have made them into such key players in the UK fashion industry. In 1894, John Barbour opened J Barbour & Sons in the marketplace of north east town South Shields, specialising in premium outdoor wear for the cold and wet weather of the north of England. Within two decades, 75% of their business was through mail order including orders from as far away as Chile, South Africa and Hong Kong, reflecting their global expansion. Today this 5th generation family owned business is an established fashion brand, providing stylish and technical clothes and footwear for men and women, as well as homewares.

In particular, it is Barbour men's and women's jackets that have really made an impact on British fashion.
