17 Jun 2021

Choosing the right fly rug for your horse can be an incredibly hard decision! There are so many styles available and lots to think about when it comes to choosing which fly sheet is ideal for your horse (or the weather!). Our fly protection series features lots of advice on the best fly products to see you through the summer months, as well as product reviews from our customers with honest advice on the products they love.

This week it’s the turn of the Shires Zeb Tek Fly Rug. We asked one of our customers who used this rug last summer and is using it again this year to tell us all about why they chose this option and any positives/negatives of the rug.

Shires Tempest Zeb Tek Fly Rug Features

This Shires fly rug has a whole host of features and most importantly it won’t break the bank. Inspired by nature and informed by science, the Zeb Tek Combo Fly Rug uses zebra stripes to deter bothersome flies and biting insects. Scientific research shows that stripes effectively prevent flies from landing on the horse. The ultra-breathable fabric also blocks up to 80% of UV radiation.

Why did you pick this fly rug?

It was a good value fly rug and I had read a bit about the zebra stripe pattern being effective against flies. One of my horses was really struggling with the amount of flies bothering her and is sensitive to repellent so I thought I’d give it a try.

What are the best features of this Shires Tempest Fly Rug?

The rug is lightweight, and airy making it ideal for warm weather. The patterning is effective and it really seemed to keep the flies away. It’s great having lined areas in the rug too as this has protected against rubbing.

Are there any negatives to this Zeb Tek rug?

In my opinion this rug is great for horses that look after their rugs, but perhaps not for a rug wreaker. I selected this rug knowing that it wasn’t going to offer complete coverage of the belly etc as this isn’t something my horse needed. If your horse needs enhanced coverage under the belly this is not the rug for you.

Our reviewer advised she’d absolutely recommend this rug to a friend. Interested in finding out more? Head to our website for full details of this rug or to browse our entire fly rug collection.
