Aztec Diamond were one of the first brands to take the concept of a base layer – a thin layer that is usually made of breathable, stretchy fabric for comfort during exercise – and bring it to the equestrian market. Launched in 2014, the Aztec Diamond equestrian range began with core essentials that founder Jordan McCabe believed were lacking from the contemporary equestrian-wear market. Among these essentials was the Aztec Diamond base layer. The ideology behind the base layers was akin to that behind the brand – to create clothing designed for performance that makes you feel good when you wear it, giving you the confidence to wear equestrian clothing while going about your daily life. The original Aztec Diamond base layer was a fitted, second-skin layer made of stretch fabric with mesh panels for breathability. The branding was subtle and this minimalist look is one that continues to define the aesthetic of the brand today.

The Aztec Diamond base layers have seen some subtle changes in their designs in each season over the years, with changes to the branding, additional mesh panels, various cuts at the neck, and of course the addition of new colours, but the current season has not strayed far from the original design concept. Some of their colours are now core colours that reappear season on season, standing as a testament to their popularity.

In recent years, an Aztec Diamond short-sleeved base layer was introduced, which proved incredibly popular. Show shirts, T-shirts, thin sweaters and vest tops have since been added to the collection, all maintaining the signature Aztec Diamond minimalist aesthetic and made from the same technical fabric. The addition of their Young Rider range saw the launch of the Aztec Diamond kids’ base layers, which have proved as popular as the ladies’. The Aztec Diamond base layers are intended to be worn as a second skin, meaning they look best when they are fitted. The sizing runs true to size in reflection of this, so if you prefer a looser fitting base layer, you may prefer to buy a size larger than usual.

Because their base layers are designed to be worn as a second skin, Aztec Diamond understand that their choice of fabrics must deliver on what an active horse rider needs. There have been several advances in the technical features of the material used in recent years, and today’s base layer is made from 40+UV protective fabric, is super stretchy with spandex, soft against the skin and moisture-wicking.

Your Aztec Diamond base layer is machine washable at 30°C. Because of the thin, breathable fabric, the base layers dry very quickly, meaning they are ready to wear and enjoy again quickly!
