A fleece or cooler rug is an essential part of your horse's rug collection, and a convenient rug you are sure to use again and again. A fleece or cooler is ideal for use after exercise to prevent the horse's muscles from cooling too rapidly; likewise, in very cold temperatures, a fleece put on a tacked up horse before exercising can keep the horse warm before warming up. The material of a fleece or cooler rug is moisture-wicking, so not only wicks sweat away from a horse that has exercised intensely, but also helps to dry the horse after bathing, and prevents them from getting cold. While travelling, your horse is sure to appreciate a breathable layer to stop them becoming chilly with minimal chance of them over-heating.

What is a horse fleece rug?

A fleece for a horse is a soft, breathable and lightweight rug that wicks away moisture and stops a hot horse from cooling down too rapidly. It is an ideal layer for travelling on cooler days, helping to dry the horse after a bath or as a lightweight insulating layer for wear indoors.

What is a horse cooler?

A cooler is often thinner than a fleece rug and is designed to keep the horse clean and/or wick away moisture in warmer temperatures or after hard exercise. A cotton cooler is a handy lightweight layer to have to hand to put on your horse when they are stabled or travelling.

What do you use a horse fleece for?

Fleece rugs for horses are very versatile. A fleece is essential for the horse to wear after a bath, especially if the temperature is cold – a wet horse will feel the cold, but a stable rug or turnout rug cannot be worn as it is not breathable enough to allow a wet horse to dry underneath. The skin staying damp can lead to skin problems as well as the risk of the horse catching a chill. A fleece not only provides a thin and breathable layer of insulation on cooler days when the horse is wet but also wicks away moisture, quickening the drying process while simultaneously allowing the skin to breathe. A fleece is also commonly used on a horse that has worked hard during and after the cool-down process. When the muscles cool too rapidly, we risk soreness and damage, and a fleece prevents the body from losing heat too quickly.

How do I clean my horse fleece rug?

Most fleece or cooler horse rugs are machine washable or can be sent to a professional rug cleaning company to be cleaned. Does my fleece rug need surcingles? You may have noticed some horse fleeces come with surcingles (straps that cross under the belly) while others do not. Surcingles keep the rug in place, and so are necessary on a rug that is to be worn while the horse is stabled and not tied. Show fleeces are designed to be worn while travelling and/or over tack while the horse stands, and so do not need surcingles to stay secure, but most horse fleeces and coolers do have surcingles.

Does my fleece or cooler rug need a neck?

While most cooler rugs for horses come without a neck, some do feature a neck covering. The neck is an area that does sweat and a cooler rug with a neck will help wick sweat away from the skin at this area more quickly. However, horses lose relatively little heat through their necks, and it is more important to stop the quarters from becoming cold after the horse has been hot. It is therefore not essential for your cooler rug or fleece to have a neck covering.

A fleece rug is soft and provides a thin layer of insulation, while a cooler can have mesh inserts for extra airflow and feel lighter in weight. Both will dry a wet horse and prevent the muscles from losing heat too quickly on cold days.
